You may feel uncomfortable at first, but these exercises will help you speed up your recovery and reduce postoperative pain.

Artificial hip joint exercises: lying exercises 

You can do these exercises lying down:

  • Ankle pump exercise

You can do the ankle pump exercise as follows:

  1. Lie on your back.
  2. Gently push your ankle up and down by pulling your foot up toward you and then pushing your foot down.
  3. Repeat this exercise 10 times in one set, doing one set every hour you are awake.
  4. Continue until you return to your normal activity level.
  • Ankle rotation exercise

You can do the ankle rotation exercise as follows:

  1. Lie on your back.
  2. Move your ankle inward toward the other foot.
  3. Slide your ankle out and away from your other foot.
  4. Repeat the exercise 5 times in each direction.
  5. Do 3 or 4 sessions daily.
  • Bed Supported Knee Curl Exercise

You can do a bed-supported knee bend as follows:

  1. Move your foot toward your buttocks and bend your knee, keeping your heel on the bed.
  2. Hold your knee in the maximum flexion position for 5-10 seconds and then straighten it.
  3. Repeat the exercise 10 times in one session and do 3-4 sessions daily.

You can do the buttock press exercise as follows:

  1. Tighten the buttock muscles by squeezing the muscles together, without holding yourself back.
  2. Hold the tension position for 5 seconds and then relax.
  3. Repeat the exercise 10 times per set.
  4. Do two sets per day.

You can do the abduction exercise as follows:

  1. Move your leg to the side.
  2. Keep the kneecap facing the ceiling.
  3. Move your leg to the starting position.
  4. Use a plastic bag under the heel to help it slide easily.

You can do a quadriceps exercise as follows:

  1. Lie on your back and keep your legs straight.
  2. Tighten your thigh muscles by pushing your knee down the bed, don’t hold yourself back.
  3. Repeat the exercise 10 times per set.
  4. Do two sets per day.
  • Straight leg raise

You can do the straight leg raise as follows:

  1. lay on your back.
  2. Flex your non-surgical leg.
  3. Tighten the thigh muscles in the leg that was operated on, keeping your knee completely straight on the bed.
  4. Raise your leg about 30 cm.
  5. Hold for 5-10 seconds and then slowly lower it.
  6. Repeat the exercise until your thigh feels tired.

Soon after surgery you will be able to get out of bed and able to stand. You will need assistance at first but when you regain your strength you will be able to stand independently.

While doing these standing exercises, make sure that you are holding a stable surface such as a bar attached to a bed or a wall. These exercises include:

  • heel raise exercise

You can do the heel lift as follows:

  1. Keep your body weight evenly distributed across the legs.
  2. Gently stand on your toes by lifting your heels off the floor.
  3. Keep your buttocks muscles tight .
  4. Keep your knees straight at all times.
  5. Slowly lower your heels to the floor.
  6. Repeat the exercise 10 times.
  • Standing abduction exercise 

You can do this exercise as follows:

  1. Make sure the knee, foot and hip are pointing straight ahead and keep your body straight.
  2. Move your leg to the side where it will rise off the ground.
  3. Slowly lower your foot and bring it back to the ground.
  4. Repeat the exercise 10 times in one session.
  5. Do 3-4 sessions daily.

Artificial hip joint exercises: walking

Proper walking is the best artificial hip joint exercise. At first you will walk using a walker or crutches, and your surgeon or therapist will tell you how much weight your leg should bear.

Stand comfortably and erect with your weight balanced on a walker or crutches. Push the walker a short distance, then extend your foot forward with your operated leg, keeping your knee straight so that your heel first touches the ground.

Remember, first let your heels touch the ground, then spread your foot out, then lift your toes off the ground and walk at a slow, steady pace and gradually.
