Many people suffer from a sudden spasm in the back, which is a muscle contraction that causes difficulty in movement and severe pain, so what are the causes of these back spasms and how can they be overcome?

Causes of back spasms

Back spasms occur for several reasons, and the most important and most prominent causes of these back spasms are the following:

  • Weakness in the tendons and muscles of the back: and therefore easy to be affected by any excessive stress or disease problems such as; infections.
  • Wrong movements: which a person makes suddenly, whether sitting or sleeping in the wrong way, as well as carrying heavy weights or objects in an incorrect manner.
  • Taking some medications to treat diseases: such as; Anemia medicines, diabetes medicines, and cancer medicines, as they can cause pain, inflammation and weakness in the bones and joints.
  • Nerve disorders: Frequent spasms in the back indicate a defect or problem in the nerves connected to it.

Back spasms symptoms

Symptoms of back spasms are:

  • Severe back pain : This pain may extend to the neck area and headache in the head.
  • Difficulty in movement: the patient is forced to remain in a bent position to avoid further pain.
  • Numbness and tingling in the back: This pain may be accompanied by a feeling of numbness in the same area.

Back spasms treatment

After we have learned about the most important causes of back spasms and their symptoms, we must now note the ways to be taken when having these back spasms, which are represented in the following:

1- complete rest

It is necessary to respond to the requirements of the body in obtaining rest and immobility until the pain caused by cramps decreases, and it is preferable to relax on the bed slowly and keep the body stationary for a while, while breathing deeply, and it is also recommended to raise the legs on a pillow to reduce pressure on the spine.

2- cold compresses

Cold compresses effectively contribute to getting rid of back spasms, as they are placed on the injury site while lying on the abdomen, preferably with the help of a person at home.

Cold compresses reduce inflammation that causes spasms, and they also help relax muscles and reduce spasms, and if cold compresses are not available at home, you can bring a towel and put some ice pieces with it and then put it on the affected area for 15 minutes.

It is recommended to repeat these compresses every two hours at most, from feeling pain until bedtime, and can be done the next day if the pain persists.

3- Warm compresses

In the event that the pain decreases and the muscles calm down, warm compresses can be made on the area of ​​the spasms, as this will relieve the pain completely, as the heat helps to increase blood circulation and thus warm the muscles , and reduce pain.

To apply warm compresses, the towel is soaked in warm water, then squeezed and rid of excess water and placed on the affected area for 10 minutes, taking care not to be exposed to cold air so as not to cause bone infections again.

Warm compresses can be replaced by taking a warm bath and shedding water on the cramps area in case you are able to do this. He warns against using hot water because it can cause swelling and puffiness in the back.

4- Back massage

Gently massaging the affected area contributes to muscle relaxation and ridding them of spasms, as it improves blood flow in this area of ​​the body, and some oils can be used in the work of massage, such as; Coconut oil or olive oil after warming it up a bit.

The massage is done for 10 minutes by a family member, then a warm towel is placed on the area for another 10 minutes.

Ways to prevent back spasms

To avoid back spasms, it is recommended to follow these things:

1- Doing sports

Exercising helps relieve spasms, relax muscles and flexibility joints, which reduces the chances of back spasms, and among the most prominent sports that help maintain the health of the back and bones are swimming, resistance and elongation exercises.

2- Avoid sudden movements

They are the most common causes of back pain, such as; Carrying things the wrong way and moving suddenly, and sitting in a certain position for a long time leads to convulsions, and therefore the body must be moved and the position changed from time to time.

3- The back is not exposed to the causes of infections

This also applies to all parts of the body, the direct cold from the cooling devices leads to infections in the bones and spasms, and you should not go out in cold weather after being in a hot place, especially after showering because this will cause infections as well.

4- Eat healthy foods and vitamins

It will strengthen the bones and joints and reduce the chances of them being affected by any diseases, and vegetables and fruits are among the most important foods that must be included in the daily diet because they contain a large amount of nutrients and vitamins that the body needs.
