Dormant tuberculosis symptoms

What is dormant tuberculosis?

What is dormant tuberculosis?

Latent tuberculosis (LTB), also called latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is when a person is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but does not have active tuberculosis.

Dormant tuberculosis symptoms

Tuberculosis has different stages, including the inactive tuberculosis stage, which is the stage that precedes active tuberculosis.

It is important to know the symptoms of dormant tuberculosis, if they are present, in order to get to know the dormant tuberculosis closely:

dormant tuberculosis

It is a disease that occurs as a result of the transmission of a bacterial infection to humans through the droplets of a person infected with active tuberculosis .

A person is not contagious in the inactive tuberculosis stage; Because the bacteria are live but ineffective, and a person may become contagious if he does not receive appropriate treatment immediately.

The treatment of dormant tuberculosis is one of the most important reasons for the spread of the disease and its confinement

 symptoms

In fact, there are no symptoms of dormant tuberculosis; Because the bacteria are still ineffective, but there are signs that indicate the presence of the disease, which are:

  • A skin or blood test for tuberculosis is positive.
  • A chest x-ray is normal and mucus is also checked.
  • No symptoms appear in contacts, the patient is still not contagious at this stage.

Symptoms of converting dormant tuberculosis to active tuberculosis

Dormant tuberculosis develops over time if it is not treated; To become active tuberculosis and accompanied by the emergence of symptoms in the patient.

1. Common symptoms of active tuberculosis

There are common symptoms that appear on a patient with active tuberculosis, the most important of which are:

  • A severe and persistent cough for three weeks or more.
  • chest pain;
  • Exiting blood and mucus from the mouth with coughing.

2. Less common symptoms of active tuberculosis

Common symptoms may accompany the appearance of other symptoms on a patient with active tuberculosis, the most important of which are:

  • Fatigue
  • Anorexia.
  • Weight loss.
  • Chills.
  • Increased sweating at night.

Factors that increase the risk

Direct contact by breathing with one of the following people is one of the most important factors in increasing the incidence of dormant tuberculosis:

  1. Persons with contagious active tuberculosis.
  2. People who travel overseas frequently.
  3. Persons exposed to infection as a result of lack of housing or homelessness, sharing contaminated needles, and AIDS patients .
  4. Persons exposed to infection by working in hospitals, living in refugee camps and prisons.

Diagnosis

Since no symptoms of dormant tuberculosis appear, there are two important examinations that indicate the presence of the disease, and they are as follows:

  • Tuberculosis skin test (TST)

The patient’s forearm is injected with a small amount of tuberculin . If a mild rash appears, such as: red bumps at the injection site, within 48-72 hours, the patient is considered to have inactive tuberculosis.

  • Tuberculosis blood test

It is used to confirm a positive result in a skin test, or if the patient has previously taken the tuberculosis vaccine before infection, in which case the skin test becomes ineffective.

dormant tuberculosis treatment

Although there are no symptoms of dormant tuberculosis, it must be treated as soon as it is diagnosed to avoid it becoming an active, contagious state by the following:

  • An antibiotic called isoniazid  for 6 months.
  • Two antibiotics together: isoniazid and rifampin for 3 months.
