Indigestion is a medical term that describes a disorder in its center and negative feeling centered in the upper part of the stomach, and here is meant a functional disorder without apparent cause, such as: ulcers, inflammation, tumor, and biochemical changes.

This disorder is often persistent in nature, or with a tendency to disappear and then reappear, and this is a common problem that affects about 7% – 25% of the population in developing countries.

symptoms

Symptoms of indigestion include:

  • A bad feeling may appear as pain, tightness, and swelling.
  • Feeling full and full even after eating a snack.
  • burping;
  • constipation;
  • burning feeling;
  • nausea;
  • vomiting;

There is great variation in the appearance of symptoms related to indigestion, which may appear all or a large part of them simultaneously, or may appear different symptoms each time.

Symptoms may be mild, with very little impact on the quality and normal course of life, while they may be so severe that they significantly impair quality of life and daily functioning.

Causes and risk factors

Among the main causes of indigestion:

  • Disturbances in the mechanics of the stomach, especially the delay in evacuating food from the stomach.
  • A defect in the adaptation system and the suitability of the stomach to the food entering it.
  • Hypersensitivity of the stomach in everything related to the feeling of pain.
  • Pollution caused by the bacteria  Helicobacter pylori ( the Helicobacter pylori infection ).

risk factors

Among the factors that increase the feeling of indigestion are psychological factors, such as:

  • tendency to depression.
  • Tendency to worry.

 complications

Complications of indigestion:

  • Esophageal stricture.
  • Stenosis of the pyloric sphincter (Pyloric stenosis).
  • Peritonitis.

Diagnosis

If the symptoms are mild and there are no severe symptoms that cause concern, such as:  weight loss , difficulties in swallowing, especially if the patient is under the age of 45 years, no special tests are needed for the diagnosis.

In other cases, the doctor may consider a need to do the following:

  • Blood tests.
  • Imaging tests of the upper digestive tract, such as: endoscopy.
  • Ultrasound imaging.

 treatment

Treatment varies according to the severity of the disease. Treatment can be clarified as follows:

1. Treatment of mild cases

In mild cases of the disease there is no need to treat indigestion, only alleviating stress and fears is sufficient treatment.

2. Treatment of difficult cases

In the most difficult cases, the treatment is as follows:

  • Medications that neutralize or reduce stomach acid secretions can relieve symptoms and help many patients.
  • Eradication of H. pylori.
  • Drugs that treat constipation and speed up gastric emptying have been tried, but their effectiveness is still questionable.

Looking to the future, researchers believe that the solution to this problem lies in drugs that affect the sensitivity of the stomach and the ability of the stomach wall to adapt and relax. There are a number of drugs with these properties that are still being researched and tested today.

Indigestion prevention

To prevent indigestion, do the following:

  • Eat small meals.
  • Eat slowly.
  • Avoid eating acidic foods, such as: tomatoes.
  • Avoid drinking caffeine.
