Important information about an open stomach

The term open stomach is often used to denote a relaxation of one of the stomach valves that results in acid reflux, namely:

1. Upper valve for stomach

This valve is called the lower esophageal sphincter. Normally, this valve is supposed to close regularly to prevent stomach contents, including acid, from backing up into the esophagus.

But when this valve becomes loosened, it allows acids to return from the stomach to the esophagus, which may lead to triggering the following: food reflux disease from the stomach to the esophagus, esophageal ulcers, and heartburn.

2. Lower gastric valve

This valve connects the stomach and small intestine, and is called the pyloric sphincter. This valve helps food to pass from the stomach into the intestines and prevents it from returning back to the stomach.

When this valve relaxes, digestive juices, such as bile , may reflux into the stomach and into the esophagus, which may lead to health consequences such as: bile reflux and food reflux disease from the stomach to the esophagus.
