What will happen if the bile duct is blocked?

Bile passes out of the liver through the bile ducts and is stored in the gallbladder. After a meal, it is released into the small intestine. When the bile ducts become blocked, bile builds up in the liver, and jaundice (yellow color of the skin) develops due to the increasing level of bilirubin in the blood.

Symptoms of bile duct obstruction

The liver produces a fluid called liver bile. The bile of the liver contains waste bilirubin , cholesterol and liver bile salts that help the small intestine digest fats.

Bile passes through the bile ducts from the liver to the gallbladder where digestive juices are stored, and is carried to the small intestine when needed in the digestion of fat food.

It is worth noting that it is not a single channel, it is a network of channels to transport the bile of the liver from the liver to the small intestine through the gallbladder .

When one or more of the ducts that transport digestive juices become blocked, this medical condition is known as bile duct obstruction.

A blockage of the bile duct can lead to a buildup of bile in the liver and a buildup of bilirubin in the blood, so what are the symptoms of bile duct obstruction? 3

Symptoms of bile duct obstruction

Bile duct symptoms may appear suddenly in the affected person or may notice them gradually over the years of infection.

Where the symptoms of bile duct obstruction appear as a result of the complications resulting from its blockage, as some symptoms are caused by the reflux of what the liver has produced and excreted into the blood.

Some symptoms are caused by the inability of the small intestine to digest the fatty substances that the body needs in the process of digesting the bile of the liver.

There are also symptoms that result from the body’s inability to absorb vitamins and food that needs cholesterol to be transported into the body.

Symptoms of bile duct obstruction include:

  • Feeling of intense itching.
  • The color of the skin turns yellow and this condition is called jaundice and it is the result of the re-exposure of bilirubin in the blood.
  • Abdominal pain, especially in the upper right area.
  • Night sweats and fever.
  • Tiredness and loss of energy to do anything.
  • Weight loss resulting from a clear loss of appetite.

bile duct obstruction treatment

In some cases, surgery is used to bypass a bile duct obstruction.

Sometimes the gallbladder is surgically removed if the blockage is caused by gallstones. A specialist may prescribe antibiotics if a bacterial infection is suspected.

If the blockage is caused by cancer, the duct may need to be widened. This procedure is called endoscopic dilatation.
